Stop punishing yourself

✨ Intro paragraph

It’s easy to be hard on ourselves — to feel guilty for resting, eating something “off plan,” or simply not being productive enough. In this post, I share a personal story from my own coaching journey and how learning self-compassion helped me shift that guilt into awareness and growth.

🌿 Guilty Pleasures

When I first started my journey with my own life coach, one of the main things I worked on was learning how to be kinder to myself and stop feeling guilty all the time.

During those early sessions, I found myself constantly coming back to topics around guilt.

For example, I often felt uncomfortable or self-critical whenever I wasn’t being “productive enough.” If I had free time with no plans, I’d feel like I was wasting it — especially on weekends, when scrolling through Instagram and seeing friends out enjoying themselves made me feel even worse.

I would also exercise twice as hard the day after a “cheat meal,” almost as a form of punishment. I’d get angry at myself — and at my body — for the idea that I already looked “fatter.” Whenever I slipped on my diet or gained a little weight, the guilt would triple. The anxiety before stepping on the scale was real; that dread as I placed one foot and then the other was almost unbearable.

I also struggled with patience. If I couldn’t do something perfectly or immediately, I’d get upset with myself. I rarely celebrated progress or small wins — only what I hadn’t achieved yet.

💭 What I’ve Learned About Guilt

Through coaching, I learned that guilt often walks hand in hand with anger — especially anger turned inward.

If you’ve read my post “When I Am Angry” on Instagram, you’ll recognize this pattern: we can be aggressive toward ourselves not only through actions, but through words and thoughts too.

I didn’t always realize how harsh I was with myself — in the way I spoke, thought, and even felt. My internal dialogue wasn’t kind, and my emotions mirrored that.
